Corruption is Brazil’s most serious problem for 87%, survey shows

Corruption is Brazil’s most serious problem for 87%, survey shows

Corruption is the most serious problem facing the country for 87% of Brazilians, according to the eighth edition of the Healthy and Sustainable Living 2026 survey, conducted by GlobeScan with the support of Instituto Akatu. Among the five issues categorized as very serious by the population—including wars and armed conflicts or extreme poverty—corruption was the only one that grew in comparison to last year’s survey. In contrast, the credibility of the national government has declined. In 2024, 43% of Brazilians had a lot or some trust in the government, a figure that dropped to 32% in the most recent study. Álvaro Almeida, director of GlobeScan in Brazil, believes that although the survey does not ask respondents the reason for their assessment, the prominence given to this issue is likely due to its relevance in the media and the fact that it is an election year. “Corruption is a topic that is present at all times in the media and on social networks, increasingly dominating publications as we approach the elections,” he said. Lucio Valente, director of Instituto Akatu, explains that people are concerned about management and leadership, whether in the governmental sphere or the private sector, which contributes to the current climate of distrust in the country and influences the results. The survey interviewed more than 32,000 people across 33 countries. Globally, corruption appears as a very serious problem for 60% of respondents, trailing only the perception of wars and armed conflicts (65%). Environmental issues also gained ground in the study. Seven out of ten Brazilians fear climate change and claim they want to reduce their socio-environmental impact through daily actions aimed at protecting nature. Almeida notes that with each study, this desire for change diminishes, primarily because people do not find the means, conditions, or infrastructure to act. “People lose their motivation, the impulse to act. They naturally become discouraged,” he says. Valente states that environmental issues are still treated with a certain detachment, as in some situations, people still view the topic as an abstract concept. “People talk a lot about protecting the Amazônia or any other biome, even though many of them may not live in those environments or know what they are like. It is precisely this issue of proximity that leads to a greater sense of purpose,” explains the director of Instituto Akatu. For him, it is necessary for socio-environmental aspects to be correlated with solutions relevant to daily life, holding personal importance. According to the study, the high price of environmentally responsible products (51%), the lack of clear and transparent information regarding sustainable attributes (43%), and low availability and access to products on conventional shelves and sales channels (43%) are also identified as challenges by Brazilians. The survey also points out that the rising cost of living is the main impact perceived in private life, both by Brazilians and the global average, at 66% and 54%, respectively. According to the data, the perceived personal impact fell across all themes in 2026, but as with the cost of living, Brazil remains above the global average in all of them. Regarding reliability, Valente states that science and academic research have gained importance among Brazilians in a scenario of uncertainty, reaching 81% of a lot or some trust, compared to the 80% reported in 2025.
