96% of companies say they use AI, survey finds

96% of companies say they use AI, survey finds

More than 96% of the 379 nonfinancial companies surveyed by Brazil’s Central Bank said they use artificial intelligence in their internal processes. Of the total, 36.7% said they use the technology experimentally or in informal or unstructured initiatives. In comparison, 34% said they use it only in support functions. The data is from the Firmus Survey, released Monday (28). The monetary authority asked companies about their current stage of AI adoption, with answers ranging from “no use and no plans for adoption in the short term” to “structured, recurring, and widespread use integrated into most processes.” The Central Bank said 20.1% of respondents reported using AI in a structured and recurring way in their core business operations. Another 5.5% said they use the technology broadly and have integrated it into most of the company’s internal processes. Among companies that reported no internal use of AI, 2.6% said they intend to introduce the technology in the short term, while 1.1% have no plans to do so. Despite using AI, most companies have not estimated the technology’s impact on either production volume or production costs. A total of 63.9% of respondents had no estimate for either measure. Fourteen percent reported an increase of more than 1% and up to 5% in production volume. Another 7.7% said output grew by more than 5%, while 7.4% reported an impact close to zero, ranging from a 1% decline to a 1% increase. Regarding average production costs, 12.4% of respondents said the change was nearly zero, ranging from a 1% decrease to a 1% increase. Another 7.1% reported an impact of more than 1% but less than 5%. The Central Bank also asked companies how AI assists their operations. The options included analysis; text generation and analysis; software-code generation and review; image and video generation; image recognition and analysis; voice transcription and generation; and robotics and autonomous equipment used in physical processes. According to the survey, 84.4% of respondents use AI to generate and analyze text. More than 80% use it for data-based analysis, classification, and forecasting. Another 50.4% use AI to generate images and videos, while 49.3% use it to generate and review software code. Voice transcription and generation was cited by 31.9% of respondents, image recognition and analysis by 31.7%, and robotics and autonomous equipment in physical processes by 16.1%. According to the Central Bank, the Firmus Survey assesses nonfinancial companies’ perceptions of business conditions and the economic variables influencing their decisions. The survey covered 379 companies in the third quarter of 2026, with responses collected from August 10 to 28. Translation: Todd Harkin
